Parallel text against tap-to-translate

Parallel text removes the fear: whatever happens, the meaning is one column away. That is exactly why it works at the beginning — and exactly why people eventually leave it. Once your eyes know the translation is there, they go there first, and you end up reading your own language with a foreign soundtrack.

Tap-to-translate keeps the page in one language and makes you decide, word by word, what you actually do not know. It is harder in the first ten minutes and it is the point of the whole exercise afterwards. Tap the first and last word of a phrase and it is translated as a unit, which matters for idioms that fall apart word by word.

The catalogue is the ceiling

Beelinguapp's library is its product: stories written and recorded for learners, news pieces, song lyrics, audiobooks. It is well made, and it is finite. There is no documented way to bring your own book into it, so the day you want to read a specific novel, the app cannot follow you there.

Readlang Mobile has its own graded library too, but the EPUB you already own opens in the same reader, with the same tap-to- translate behaviour, and so does an article you paste a link to. For most people that is the moment one app replaces the other — not a feature comparison, just a book they wanted to read.

About the audio

Here Beelinguapp is straightforwardly better. Their narration is recorded by native speakers and synchronised to the line you are on, and that karaoke-style reading is genuinely good for pronunciation and rhythm. Readlang Mobile has narration on library titles, but it is synthesised, and a synthetic voice is not a voice actor.

If listening is the main reason you open a language app, weigh that heavily.

What Beelinguapp does better

Plainly, where Beelinguapp wins:

• Recorded narration. Real voice actors, synced line by line — better than any synthetic voice, including ours.
• A gentler start. At A1 a monolingual page is simply too hard. The parallel column keeps a beginner moving instead of stalling.
• Short formats. News pieces and song lyrics you can finish in one sitting, which beats a novel you never open.
• Android. Beelinguapp is on both stores. Readlang Mobile is iOS only for now.
• More languages, more pairs. 22 languages, and the pair you want is not limited by what Apple supports on your device.

And, as with any two reading apps, nothing stops you keeping both: Beelinguapp for the audio sessions, Readlang Mobile for the book.

If you move over

Nothing needs migrating — the words you saved in Beelinguapp stay in its glossary, and Readlang Mobile starts collecting from the first word you tap. The adjustment is not technical but mental: for the first chapter you will miss the second column, and then you will stop noticing.

A practical way to start is a book one level below where you think you are. Tapping every third word is a sign the text is too hard, not that the method is wrong.
